What is Matcha Green Tea?

Matcha is a lovely, powdered type of Japanese green tea (Camellia sinensis). It is particularly rich in antioxidant compounds believed to be the result of a special cultivation method. According to traditional method, the tea bushes are covered with bamboo mats to shade the leaves from excessive direct sunlight for the majority of their growth period. Plants are able to produce higher amounts of amino acids and bioactive compounds due to this shading process. As a result, matcha is highly valued for its quality, taste, vibrant colour and health benefits.

Studies have confirmed that matcha green tea has many qualities that beneficially effect human health. The tea demonstrates outstanding antioxidant activity, boosts detoxification processes, helps to improve insulin sensitivity, and has a thermogenic effect that may support weight loss. The caffeine in the tea appears to inhibit proinflammatory cytokines, giving it anti-inflammatory potential. Matcha also contains l-theanine, a rare amino acid that promotes relaxation, Drinking matcha tea may be a worthwhile hack to slow down the aging process. Wow, who knew matcha green tea had so many super powers!

Key Ingredients & Substitutions:

  • Almond milk– This recipe uses almond milk as a nutritional upgrade from regular dairy milk. Any nut milk or oat milk will work. Regular milk will work too if you’re not too concerned about dairy.
  • Matcha green tea – I recommend using organic matcha gree tea. Buying organic usually ensures a good quality product and will minimize your exposure to pesticides. Tea in general is known to be heavily sprayed with pesticides.
  • Monk fruit sweetener- monk fruit is a natural, no calorie sweetener that can be used to lower sugar intake but still enjoy the taste of something sweet. I use Lakanto or Volupta brand (erythritol and monk fruit sweetener), which I buy at Costco.
  • MCT oil– MCT oil is a heatlhy saturated fat that has many health benefits including improved cognition, which is why I include it in this drink. If you don’t have any, skip this ingredient. It is not needed to ensure good taste of this beverage
  • collagen – For best results, use an unflavoured powdered collagen. I used Bulletproof Collagen. Collagen is not needed to ensure good taste of this beverage, so if you don’t have any, skip this ingredient. Collagen is an excellent supplement to support tendon, skin and joint remodelling.
